Audio: Doctor Who - Living Legend
Given away free with Doctor Who magazine issue 337 with a big documentary to promote Big Finish's 40th anniversary story Zagreus, Living Legend is a short original Eighth Doctor tale written by comic strip stalwart Scott Gray. It's not much cop.
The Eighth Doctor and Charley Pollard (Paul McGann and India Fisher) arrive in Italy in 1982 just as the country has won the World Cup. A couple of comedy aliens (the Threllips) have come to invade; they're lumbering and stupid and sound vaguely Cornish. By posing as Time Lord observers, with Charley as Time Lady Charleyostiantayshius (see what they did there?) and the Doctor as her lowly assistant, the pair convince the vain commander he will become a legend one day and they are here to record his big moment. The Doctor goes off with the commander (Stephen Perring), convinces him the population are suffering from the plague World Cup Fever and gets him to drink copious amounts of 'vaccine' (booze). Meanwhile Charley stokes his underling's resentment and hilarious consequences follow.
Gray has produced some excellent scripts for the Doctor Who magazine comic strip; however, Living legend is an epic fail and suggest that the author should stick to the 2D adventures of Dr Who. Best avoided.
